Ms. Atkins met her husband, Jaime Mendez, on the popular dating site, Match.com, after sending him a message on Valentine’s Day in 2008. According to the actress, they went on their first date a week later.
“I wrote him a quick little note that I had read his profile, and then I signed off, Happy SAD Day – that’s Single Awareness Day,” said Essence to People Magazine.
Match. Com is particularly proud of the matches they have made in the Black Community, stating:
“Launched in 1995, we now give black single men and women in more than 24 countries an opportunity to meet and fall in love like never before. Really, it’s never been simpler for black singles to find someone special and form a lasting relationship.”
One year after they met on the site, Mendez, a sales/marketing executive, proposed and they married in September 2009.
“Our gratitude is overwhelming to have found each other and adding a baby to our happy home is truly a dream come true,” the couple says. “We are both elated and humbled by this amazing gift.”
