Please Read: Five Ways to Protect Your Children from Predators

With the recent scandals at Penn State University, the Catholic Church and other places, it is clear that we should find ways to educate our children to prepare them for potential child predators.  Here is a short list of things you should teach your child about predators; it may save his/her life:

1) Avoid contact or conversation with strangers.  They should know to run away if an adult tries to come after them and yell to make noise.

2) Your children should know that no one is to touch their body without permission.  They should also know which body parts are “private.”

3) Don’t accept the lies that a potential predator gives you.  If you suspect that something is wrong, keep your child away from that person.  If your child says they were touched in an inappropriate way, call the authorities.

4) Explain the difference between good secrets and bad ones.  Predators often use bribes to keep children quiet, and they should know the difference.  Also, let your child know that they can talk to you about anything.

5) If your child is going to a sitter or daycare that is used by other parents, try to establish a relationship with some other parents to keep the lines of communication open.  If they have suspicions that match your own, there may be a problem.
